If you have never been to Mass before, or if you haven't gone in a long time, we are glad you're thinking of joining us. It may feel unfamiliar at first, and some parts might seem confusing: that's normal, and no one expects you to know what to do. Doors open early, and you can sit anywhere.
What happens at Mass
Mass lasts about an hour. The first half is the Liturgy of the Word: readings from the Bible, a psalm sung between them, the Gospel, and a homily: a short reflection by the priest. The second half is the Liturgy of the Eucharist: bread and wine are brought to the altar, the priest prays the Church's great prayer of thanksgiving, and people come forward to receive communion.
People stand, sit, and kneel at different points. Just follow what those around you do: nobody is watching, and nobody minds a visitor a half-beat behind.
About communion
Communion is reserved for Catholics who have been prepared to receive it. If that's not you, you are still completely welcome: stay in your seat, or come forward with your arms crossed over your chest to receive a blessing instead.
Practical things
Wear whatever you'd wear to meet someone you respect: you'll see everything from jeans to jackets. Children are welcome at every Mass, noise and all. A collection basket is passed during Mass; visitors are not expected to give. After Mass, people linger: feel free to introduce yourself to anyone, or to the priest at the door.

The shape of the Mass
Every Mass, everywhere on earth, moves through the same four movements. Once you can feel the shape, nothing in it will surprise you.
The Gathering
A hymn, a procession, the sign of the cross, and a moment of asking God's mercy. You can simply stand with everyone and take it in.
The Word
Readings from the Old Testament, the Psalms, the letters of the apostles, and the Gospel: then the homily, where the priest connects them to your actual life. This part is pure listening. You will be good at it.
The Eucharist
Bread and wine are brought up, and the prayer Christians have prayed since the beginning is prayed again. Catholics believe that what comes back from the altar is no longer bread and wine. When others go forward, stay seated, or come up with arms crossed for a blessing.
The Sending
A blessing, and the words "Go forth": the Mass ends by pointing you back out the door, into the week. The whole thing takes about an hour. You can leave quietly, or stay for the last hymn and say hello.
